What is
California GEAR UP?
California GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) is a federally funded initiative dedicated to increasing college awareness and preparation among underserved middle and high school students across California.
In 2025, California was awarded a seven-year GEAR UP state grant from the U.S. Department of Education — a $66 million investment made up of 50% ($33 million) in federal funding and 50% ($33 million) in nonfederal matching support from our partners. This investment will strengthen college readiness outcomes for students, families, and educators across the state.
By partnering with school districts, community organizations, and higher education institutions, CA GEAR UP works to ensure every student has the knowledge, skills, and resources needed to succeed in college and beyond.
